What are saints? Should we pray to them? Do they have a role to play with our prayers? Does praying to saints violate the 1st Commandment? Can we honor the saints? Isn't Jesus the only mediator between God and men (1 Timothy 2:5)?

Jesus the Mediator between God and Man Compatible with Approaching Saints:

1 Timothy 2:5
Jesus is the one mediator between God and man who gave Himself as a ransom for all, therefore we must be intercessors with our prayers.
Hebrews 12:22-24 Jesus the "mediator" is placed  alongside many the other entities (including the saints)  to whom a believer "approaches" when they come to salvation.

Matthew 25:40 "What you did for the least of these, you did it to me."

1 Corinthians 12: 26-27 "...if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. "

The power of the Saints in Heaven:
 

2 Peter 1:1-4  The Saints are "partakers of the divine nature."
1 Corinthians 2:9 "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor it entered the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love him."
1 John 3:1-2 "... what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is."
